Although Jupiter and Saturn appear commonly in works of Science Fiction, extrasolar Gas Giants are relatively rare among referenced named extrasolar planets. The probable reason is that their high gravities, high atmospheric pressures, and unbreathable atmospheres make them poor locations for human dramas.

Gas giants sometimes appear in but go unnamed in science fiction works because they are places conducive to human life and drama. Theplanet in the 1995 Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode [ml "Heart of Stone" is an example. The gas giant moon in the same episode also fails to earn a name.

Interesting exceptions are the more than two million inhabited gas giants in the universe described Iain Banks's novel The Algebraist. Some 90% of these are inhabited by Dwellers. However water poor Jupiter is not among the 90%.
