Island Residents May Suffer from G-8 Presence, but Sea Island Company Will Not

Sea Island, Georgia -- Sea Island is the actual physical site of the G-8 summit this year though adjacent St. Simons Island will take at least some of the overflow. The leaders from the wealthiest nations, predominantly white, will come together in June at this southern Georgia resort to further their economic domination of the rest of world. It is fitting that the summit be held in such private and exclusive venue as Sea Island. The summit will be held on the island due to a number of factors including the fact that the Bush family has strong interests in the private resort island. George Bush, Sr. honeymooned here and has maintained long time ties to the Jones family, which owns the Sea Island Company.

G8 Pre-Summit in Bloomington, IN on June 4th
Please join concerned Hoosiers and our friends and allies from around the Midwest in gathering to say NO! to free trade and to reclaim our global community! Unbeknownst to many of us, infamous free trade economists and G8 consultants will be meeting at the Kelly School of Business on the IU Bloomington Campus this Thursday and Friday, June 3rd and 4th.

The Radicals
Like them or not, Kellie Gasink and William Pleasant have emerged as the face of Savannah's G-8 Summit demonstrations. How Savannah fares amid potentially thousands of protesters may largely depend on the success of their International Festival for Peace and Civil Liberties in Forsyth Park.

Georgia G-8 Protests Look to Be Big
May 9, 2004, Southern Georgia -- Many activists around the world are aware that the G-8 Summit is to be held on Sea Island, just off the rural coastline of Georgia, June 8th through 10th. However, there has been relatively little talk of the large numbers of activists coming together to oppose it as Europeans did when the G-8 met in Genoa, Italy in 2001.

Call for Constructive Action at G8 Meeting
This June the G8, the association of the 8 wealthiest nations in the world (Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, UK, US), will invade Sea Island, GA to continue plotting the economic domination of the world. Along with the imperialists come their attempts to instill fear and squash dissent in the local and global community. Over $25 million will be spent on their security, the coast lined with near 30,000 police and national guard, and the entire region turned upside down for the accommodation of empire, the effects of which will continue to be felt by local residents after the summit.

G8 Summit Air Security Plan Unveiled
SAVANNAH, GA (AP) -- All of Georgia's 100-mile coastline, and portions of neighboring South Carolina and Florida, will fall under federal flight restrictions during next month's G-8 summit of world leaders at Sea Island.

ACLU asks court to lift restrictions on G-8 protesters
The American Civil Liberties Union challenged local public demonstration ordinances in Brunswick and Glynn County in federal district court Monday, saying they would impose "sweeping restrictions on free speech."

Evaluation of the G8-Evian Mobilization
Four "villages", dozens of debates and conferences, 9 demos (including one of 100, 000 people), more than 5000 people in a dozen blockades coordinated all around the lake which stopped all traffic on roads into Evian on the opening morning, and four nights of violence in Geneva - clearly, the attempt to bring summit meetings back into the heart of Europe was soundly defeated.

Activists float ideas on anarchist Web site
As soon as President Bush picked the secluded resort island for next summer's G-8 summit of world leaders, anti-globalization activists were buzzing on the Internet about ways to thwart security that will be thicker than the surrounding marsh grasses.

G-8 Summit Georgia in June 2004
The White House announced that the "G-8" will be meeting in Sea Island, GA, in June 2004. Sea Island is a remote, gated community of resorts and million-dollar houses, with plenty of "security" (military bases and police academies) near by. The perfect place for the world's leading industrial "democracies" to meet.

Sea Island -- This posh resort community on the Georgia coast has been chosen to host next year's meeting of leaders of the world's major industrial countries.

Activists prepare to unwelcome the G8 in Georgia

From June 8-10, the Group of 8 (G8) Summit will bring together leaders of the world's richest nations. Behind closed doors, eight men will decide political, economic and social issues affecting more than 6 billion people. As they gather on opulent Sea Island, Georgia, the contrast to the harsh realities of environmental injustice and high unemployment in nearby Brunswick could not be more stark. Meanwhile, civil liberties in South Georgia are being undermined by the Georgia Governor's "state of emergency" and excessive police and military build up in the area.

International Days of Action
June 8-10, 2004

People's Global Action has called for international days of activism against capitalism in conjunction with the G8 protests in Georgia. PGA is the international network which called for the J18 and N30/Seattle protests in 1999. Anti-capitalist groups in Britain are organizing local solidarity events. Infoshop urges North American activists to organize decentralized anti-capitalist events and actions. If you contact us with information about your events and actions, we will list them below.

PGA Call Out For Action in Solidarity with 2004 G8

On June 8th - 10th 2004 the G8 Summit will be staged on Sea Island, 80 miles south of Savannah in the United States. This location has been specifically chosen by the G8 because it is impossible for protestors to access and therefore groups in the United States have put out a call for decentralised actions. In this spirit of solidarity with actions in the United States, the Dissent! Network, a UK-wide anti-capitalist network that operates by the People's Global Action hallmarks, is calling for local actions and events between 8th-10th June. Through a diversity of tactics Dissent hopes to make people aware of next years G8 summit in the UK and the growing movement which opposes it. Actions could range from educational films and events, to street parties and targeted direct action against the UK government.
