Chicago anti-war musician burns himself to death in rush hour traffic

Local Musician Martyrs Himself for Peace
07 Nov 2006

Chicago Indymedia has learned that last Friday local music and art afficianado and peace advocate Malachi Ritscher burned himself to death on the side of the Kennedy Expressway near downtown Chicago during the morning rush hour. Near Malachi's remains, police found a camcorder with videotape inside and a homemade sign that read "Thou Shalt Not Kill."

Besides the note and videotape at the scene, Malachi also left a longer letter explaining his actions and his motivations. "What is one more life thrown away in this sad and useless national tragedy?" he wrote. "If one death can atone for anything, in any small way, to say to the world: I apologize for what we have done to you, I am ashamed for the mayhem and turmoil caused by my country."

Malachi was among more than seven hundred peace protesters who were illegally arrested on March 20, 2003, when thousands turned out to protest the beginning of the U.S. war on Iraq. His death, to date has received very little news coverage — and outlets that did report his death treated it as a simple suicide and the cause for slower-than-usual traffic that morning. The contents of the videotape he left have not been made public. Read more here, here and here.

Yet again the media finds another way to just piss me off. Amid stories Michael Richards, and new playstations...this has somehow been conviently left off of at least any of my local news viewing. Shame. From indymedia.org Chicago Musician Martyrs H [read more]

The Chicago Reader broke the story yesterday (though the body hasn't been officially identified, many people have reason to believe it was Malachi's). More at http://blogs.chicagoreader.com/post-no-bills/#433.

He was a lonely, single, middle-aged man who had no doubt been feeling suicidal already about his personal life and decided to make his suicide count for something by making a political statement out of it. Let him have his moment of glory.

I feel for this dude, but seriously: if you're going to take your own life, take something else (not a person per se) down with you

Suicide is a total act of selfishness....end of story.

The media, nor us as a society should glorify this act of stupidity and selfishness. Furthermore, in his "big" act to make a statement he has, in effect, been less effective by this act b/c he can no longer protest. In a year this guy won't even be remembered for this.

So sad.

What ever happened to tact? To understanding? To respect for the dead? For god sake what you claim as selfishness seems to me to be the epitome of a lack of self, since he is now a charred corpse. And this was done for reasons I'd say most people wouldn't have the level of courage necessary to sacrifice themselves for their convictions in this manner. The petulant glee you take for putting a time stamp on his incredible action only proves the mediocrity of your point of view. This hackneyed summation is often applied to such tragedy, and only shows your ruthlessness and intellectual apathy. And you're not selfish about anything, are you, eh monkey?
