ANSWER Coalition claims credit for pro-immigrant demonstrations

The past few weeks have seen historic demonstrations, as hundreds of thousands of people, largely immigrant workers, have taken to the streets to oppose the racist HR 4437. In Los Angeles, protests drew as many as 2 million people. These demonstrations are much, much larger than any protests--antiwar, labor, whatever--in recent memory in the U.S.

Who or what is the driving force behind this incredible outpour of dissent?

According to Brian Becker, National Director of the ANSWER coalition, his organization is the one that is primarily responsible.

In a press conference in Washington, DC on April 3, representatives from the ANSWER coalition claimed that, not only were they the ones behind the massive protests in Los Angeles, but that they were the initiating organizers of the May 1 Great American boycott. (see www.wpherald.com/storyview.php )

ANSWER's website (see answer.pephost.org/site/News2) claims that in the Los Angeles demonstrations, the "A.N.S.W.E.R. Coalition has been deeply involved in mobilizing for the mass actions in Los Angeles and elsewhere. A.N.S.W.E.R. volunteers and organizers have been working round the clock to help in logistics, organization, mobilization and all the other tasks involved in showing authentic solidarity with the immigrant workers movement."

Which is odd, because a call placed to the actual organizers of the protest in Los Angeles and of the May 1 Great American Boycott revealed that no one there knew of any ANSWER involvement. None.

One of the activists there said, "The only time we saw anyone from ANSWER was when they approached us about having one of their people speak. They were really very rude and pushy about it, too."

He said, "We didn't know anything about the press conference in Washington. No one checked with us. We found out about it by reading the news and there were all these white activists that we have never seen before claiming to be the real organizers of our March 25 event. Then they claimed that they were the organizers of the May 1 event. It's one thing to show solidarity with our movement, but that's not what they're trying to do. They're trying to co-opt what we're doing in order to get their name out there. They're even raising money in the name of our event. Really, it's just another example of exploitation of immigrant workers, by people who claim to be in 'solidarity' with us."

We should all call ANSWER at (202) 544-3389 and ask them to stop using a legitimate movement for their own profit.

What else is it with ANSWER but claiming credit for things that aren't theres? My understanding is most of the protests have been helped organized by coalitions of local latino and other immigrant communities.

ANSWER has always been this way, since they are run by a small group of cultists associated with the Workers Wolrd Party. Supposedly ANSWER suffered a split last year with the WWP losing power and influence, but this piece confirms my suspicions that the WWP nutcases still control the puppet strings for ANSWER.

It's really about time that the anti-war movement use any means necessary to eliminate ANSWER from playing *any* role in anti-war organizing. This means that we anarchists have to come down on our comrades who stupidly and foolishly organize "feeder" and "breakaway" marches in conjunction with ANSWER protests. Any anarchist who organizes one a protest with ANSWER should be treated as if they were working with some neo-fascist group. Let's make it clear, once and for all, that ANSWER isn't just an anti-anarchist group, but a stupid organization that has driven the anti-war movement into the ground.

"Any anarchist who organizes one a protest with ANSWER should be treated as if they were working with some neo-fascist group."

That's a really fucking stupid thing to say Chuck. So we march at an ANSWER protest and hand out anarchist literature...now we're working with neo-fascists!?!

There's a difference between organizing "with" and being there to hand out phamplets. In any case, significant anarchist numbers could be seen as ANSWER supporters, so it is wise to not even show up to events they sponser unless it clear that they're a divergent group. Don't mingle with the fascists.

Doing outreach at one of these protests is okay with me, but anarchists should not be organizing protests in conjunction with the red fascists who run ANSWER. What is stupid would be any group of anarchists who organizes protests in conjunction with an ANSWER event. Such anarchist protests help mobilize people for ANSWER and ANSWER takes credit for the resultant numbers. If any anarchist doesn't understand why we don't march with red fascists, then they should either stop calling themselves an anarchist or read a history book. Anarchists do not march with people who would kill all of us should they get a chance to seize power.

Let's organize our own protests, in conjunction with more palatable groups.

Just a brainstorm - might be stupid or not -

Maybe we should attend those events and publicize "anti-answer" and pro-whatever feeders or breakaways to emphasize that Answer is not in control.

Although I agree with a lot of what the Reverend said, I hate to not directly, as well as indirectly, assist in keeping them from hijacking everything.

That damned march right into a police loop in DC a few years ago still pisses me off all to hell, especially since we saw it coming, but as LOs supposedly had to have some of us stay with them.

I absolutely agree. Since 2004 I have been calling for leftists to not only avoid organizing with ANSWER, but to openly refuse to attend events where they play a role, for groups to insist that ANSWER not be a part of any large multi-group events and refuse to participate if they are, and for activists to openly denounce ANSWER. Beyond the obvious problems with them -- their actual politics, their organizing methods and intense top-down methodology, tearing down other groups fliers, publicly calling on activists to NOT attend events that conflict with ANSWER events, etc etc etc -- there is a bigger problem that ANSWER represents on the left, and their behavior in relation to immigrant events goes right to this major point.

One of the most serious problems on the left is that large white activist dominated groups consistently attempt to "lead" our movements. This is a historical problem for us, with white activists and organizations pretty much refusing to recognize the need for the movement to be lead by the oppressed communities. I use the term "lead" not to imply any sort of "overlord" situation, by the way, just as kind of shorthand since I assume most of you know what I mean here. Anarchists are least likely, in my experience, to fall prey to this problem, whereas "liberal progressives" and socialists are perhaps the worst offenders. But ultimately, it exists to some degree pretty much all across the leftist political spectrum, and it won't go away until white activists are willing to rein in groups like ANSWER, publicly shame them and marginalize them, and then go out and make ourselves available to organizations in the oppressed communities to ask what can we do that they NEED US TO DO rather than always forming our own groups and having our own events and "inviting" them to join us.

So on general principle, ANSWER needs to face some harsh music, but there's a bigger issue and we should tackle it head on.

Ok I agree with Chuck here that we should not be working with the international answer people, but lets not get too far off track here. They are trying to claim credit for mass resistance going on here across the country! As anarchists we need to be doing outreach work. Pamphlets and zines are nice to explain why anarchists are organizing around immigrant rights issues, but we can't stop there. This is really a chance for us to get out and do what we are best at doing! -dirty south anarchist

Right-wing, left-wing, chicken-wing...fascist is fascist. This isn't about taking "potshots" at ANSWER, it's about preventing movements from being hijacked by power hungry sectarian psychopaths. If they were to take over, the only thing that would change would be the kind of people they gun down at the border: from Mexicans to anyone who doesn't have the correct Party papers.

Don't worry about "dividing" movements by attacking ANSWER, this would imply that they made up a significant portion of these movements. In reality ANSWER is a parasite in search of a host, it's a tick hanging off the elephant of the immigrants rights movement. Unfortunately they were able they were able to spread their Lyme disease and paralyze the anti-war movement, this must not happen again. Those quotes are attibuted facts, it doesn't matter who is reporting them, just because it's in the Washington Times doesn't mean it's automatically incorrect.
