Virginia Anarchist Gathering

News Archive2005 Virginia Anarchist Gathering, Harrisonburg VA October 20-23 Organizing Resistance to Authority for a World without Masters

October 20-23 (Thursday-Sunday), Harrisonburg's Rising Up Collective will host the first Virginia Anarchist Gathering, a radical conference and networking opportunity for Virginia-area anarchists and anti-authoritarians. (WV, DC, NC? We don't care about borders, come anyway!) Check out our website at www.signalfire.org/VAG or contact us at vagathering@yahoo.com.

Come for a weekend of skill-sharing, workshops, passion groups, networking, friend-making, strategizing, community activities, music and good food. Throughout the gathering we'll have film screenings, hiking, a permaculture tour, and we'll be putting the idea of mutual aid to work in the Harrisonburg area. Possible workshops include Anarchy 101, Setting Up a Radical Community Center, Trans Liberation, Community Responses to Sexual Assault, Prisoner Support, anti-racism for white folk, and an anarchist people of color only circle. Check the website for more information.

Also, if you're interested in helping with publicity, there are flyers on the volunteer page of the website you can download and print off. We're accepting additional workshop proposals until the end of September (preferably by September 20), email vagathering@yahoo.com

We are currently raising funds to provide travel scholarships for low-income people to be able to attend the conference.

if you've been to any activist gathering, most likely you've already seen something like this APOC circle. They're called caucuses.

Boo hoo. It's so sad. White people face so much racism. It's funny to me when white people who don't give a shit about racism against non-white people all of the sudden become anti-racists when people of color have a meeting without white people there. Oh, you oppressed white person, did the people of color hurt your feelings by not letting you in their meeting? You poor thing.

If a white group had a meeting for caucasians only, you would be up in arms. Anarchism means opposing ALL forms of discrimination.

Its called a Caucus. Just because a group of like-minded people get together, it is not discrimination.

If I had a medic collective caucus, I would not expect half the people showing up to talk about climbing. Nor if I had a rural anarchist caucus would I want urban folk to disrupt our discussions.

The etymology of caucus is interesting. [After the Caucus Club of Boston (in the 1760s), possibly from Medieval Latin caucus, drinking vessel.] Reminds me of the Boston Anarchist Drinking Brigade.

Caucasion? Who the hell says caucasion? Anyhow, there is nothing authoritarian or oppressive about the existence of people of color meetings, just as there is nothing wrong or oppressive about women's caucuses, men's caucuses, trans caucuses, glbt caucuses, etc. Individuals who face widespread discrimination, abuse, and oppression often join with others who face the same type of discrimination, abuse, and oppression in order to empower themselves. It is not racist for people of color to have people of color only meetings, just as it is not sexist for women to have women only meetings, and so on and so forth. It's interesting, funny, and sad that even though this is a white supremacist society there are still some white folks who aren't satisfied with that. They have to have control over everything, even a small, brief POC meeting. I guess they have to make sure that the colored folks aren't gettin' uppity. If we have a meeting without white folks present, we might start talking crazy talk, even revolution and liberation. And then what will poor massa do then, without any of us to give orders to? It'll be anarchy! Better keep them colored folks in line. Don't let them meet without whitey being around.
