Recruiting Office Bomber Sent To Prison

A man opposed to the war in Iraq will spend the next five years in federal prison for throwing a Molotov cocktail through the window of a local armed forces recruiting station in Vestal, NY, near Binghamton. After serving 5 years behind bars, Brendan Walsh of Endwell, will be supervised for 3 years.

He was recently sentenced in Federal Court.

Walsh had pleaded guilty to a charge of attempting to damage or destroy a building by arson.

In April of 2003, he threw a Molotov cocktail through the window of the recruiting station on the Vestal Parkway. He was also charged with attempted destruction of communication lines utilized by the U.S. Armed Forces, which carried a maximum sentence of 10 years. Detectives say Broome Security's work with surveillance video was crucial in their investigation.

Walsh is also responsible for smashing the window of the recruitment center in June of last year.

Brendan Walsh is a hero and deserves support. If anyone has or can find an address for him please post it here.

U.S. accuses Endwell teen of attempted arson on recruiting station.
BY WILLIAM MOYER
Press & Sun-Bulletin

An Endwell teenager is in federal custody today facing charges in connection with an incident last year at a military recruiting station at the Vestal Plaza.

FBI agents and Vestal police arrested Brendan Walsh, 19, early today at his Endwell house.

Walsh is charged with attempted arson of a federally leased building and attempted destruction of Armed Forces communication lines, Special Agent Keith A. DeVincentis said.

He faces a mandatory five-year prison term, but could be sentenced to a 30-year maximum, as well as a $500,000 fine.

Two federal, two Broome County and Vestal law enforcement agencies investigated an April 9, 2003 incident at the United States Armed Forces Recruiting Station where an incendiary device had been thrown through the front window. Damage to the building was minimal.

Remember back when we were 19? Remember all of the stupid things that we did? This is in my community and I think the kid went to the other school because I do not remember him and neither do the 2 assistant principals there because I just got off of the phone with them. The arrest happened today.- The cocktail happened right after the war started. It took them a year to find him because they were passing around this incredibly blurry picture from a security camera-I have used graphics programs and there was no way they could get anything out of this -not enough info to make a conclusive identification. I remember them looking because my mother in law owns the store 2 doors down in the same plaza where it happened they were asking everyone about this stupid blurry picture. -What if its not the right kid, and someone just had a grudge on this kid and fingered him for the heck of it? What if the kid had a brother or a best friend over there and he just went and did something stupid when he was drunk? I just talked to a friend of mine who is a public defender and he wants to get in contact with the kids lawyer. We are worried about how he will be treated because he is so young. WHat do you guys think?

To the one who lives in the same community. Have you seen the recruiting station and know for SURE it has been torched? Try to find out for certian that there is actually a Brendan Walsh who lives/lived there.

It strikes me as oddly coincidental that the person convicted of this crime has the same name as a relatively well known protester from the vietnam era.

What does it mean? Maybe nothing, maybe something. Maybe it never happened and is just an attempt to scare others who might be considering doing something like that to their own local recruiting center.

The plea bargain system places tremendous pressures on innocents to ' plead out' because of the horrendous pre Dickensian length sentences that are held held in reserve by the filthy lying brutal pigs of the state.
I pleaded guilty to assaulting police once when the truth was that they assaulted me - just another day in the empire

If he's serving a federal sentence he won't end up on the State DOC lists, but federal.

It sickens me that the so called "anti-war" movement has not gotten behind this kid and given him support since he is one of the only people to take an action for that cause that showed the depth of his dedication. If anyone has his address I would love to write him.

Brendan is now at FCI Elkton in Northern Ohio. I've written him several times (as has at least 1 other I know) and never gotten any response. Hopefully you will have better luck.

This is the last I heard of Brendan back in Feb. of 06

Anarchists in TroubleBrendan Walsh is currently imprisoned for throwing a
Molotov cocktail through the window of an armed forces recruiting station in
Vestal, NY, near Binghamton in April of 2003. He has been incacerated since
early 2005.

Walsh, through intimidation, pled guilty to the charges of arson, and is now
being held until July of 2008. He will also be under state supervision for
three years after his release.

Brendan was transfered several months ago from Allenwood, PA to Lisbon,
Ohio. Since his transfer, he has lost much of any previous correspondence he
had received from supporters on the outside and thus has been unable to
reconnect to those that had written him in the past.

Brendan has communicated that he is battling bouts of depression and that he
has felt very isolated from those on the outside.

Please send Brendan your love and show him that he has the support of our
movement for what he has done. We don't want people to feel discouraged and
alienated for militantly confronting the current war.

Send letters, cards, and words of support and love:

Brendan Walsh 12473-052
FCI/FSL Elkton
PO Box 10
Lisbon, OH 44432

Remember, he is in federal prison, so everything he receives is likely to be
read, and standard prison mail regulations apply. The best bet is to send a
plain letter or store procured/purchased (not handmade with glue, glitter,
etc..) card that does not have glitter or adhesives on it.

In love and solidarity,
