[edit] What is The World Social Forum?
The first World Social Forum was held in Porto Allegre, Brazil, in January of 2001, as a counter-summit to the World Economic Forum, an event that was being held at the same time in Davos, Switzerland. From that starting point, the World Economic Forum evolved to become an annual gathering of the global civil society. For the first four years, the gathering was held in Porto Allegre. In 2004, the gathering was held outside of Brazil for the first time, in Mubai, India. In 2006, the World Social Forum was organized as a "Polycentric" gathering, with the three offical locations being in Venezuala, Mali (West Africa), and Pakistan. And in recent years, community activists in cities all over the world have begun organizing their own regional World Social Forum gatherings. The World Social Forum is rapidly evolving to be a common frame of reference and networking tool for the global civil society.
