I copied this pretty much 'as is' from Wikipedia. I think most of the information is useful or at least interesting for the purposes of this wiki. However, there is a definate eurocentric bias to this article. Can anyone add some insight into the rise of the concept of the state outside of Western Europe? - Jaypee
