Talk:Anarchist Neighborhood

From Infoshop OpenWiki

Jump to: navigation, search

I've made the decision to discontinue the version of the Anarchohood based on static pages that only Infoshop people could edit. I will make a note about this on the relevant pages, pointing people to the AnarchoHood on the OpenWiki. This should allow more people to edit pages, which should inspire more people to create local pages. We have to be vigilant about the information posted here and we need to come up with a style guide for entries. WikiSysop 20:36, 12 Mar 2006 (PST)

[edit] standardizing hood listings

I can understand the general sentiment behind only listing state names for duplicates or "relatively unknown" places, for the sake of "simplicity", but I fail to see how this is a *fair* way to label cities. Also, I think "relatively unknown" is a rather subjective notion. For example, I think many more people have heard of "Cleveland, OH" than have heard of Providence (even if it IS a capitol city). Same for most of the other Ohio cities, for that matter, including Akron, Cincinnati, and Toledo. I'll give you Columbus (for have a variety of duplicate cities) or the lesser-known Bowling Green. But, I fail to see why all cities/regions should not be given more information for. It would ease the ability of people to quickly find the city they are looking for, as well as to provide more information for people who are not familiar with US geography... Okay, I've said my peace. Cheers, Dana

I guess I need to create a style page where this is made more clear. Your point about non-US people being unfamiliar with U.S. cities is a valid point, but the Anarchohoods at this point are primarily for a U.S. audience. Adding state names after the cities is just too much information and it looks odd, especially on an index page. I'm a librarian and should be able to cite the bibliographic reasons for this policy, but I'm blanking at the moment. At the very least, names of cities and towns that are duplicated should have a state appended. Obvious examples are Portland, Oregon and Portland, Maine.
On a related note, we do not use postal abbreviations on this wiki such as "OH" except for addresses of groups and similar. The use of postal abbreviations has unfortunately become a widespread practice. The OpenWiki uses the traditional abbreviations or full names for the states--we do have the luxury of expending electrons on the full names. WikiSysop 23:09, 2 Oct 2006 (PDT)
Further clarification. Leave state names off of index listings except for instances where clarification is necessary. For example, Bowling Green could mean Bowling Green, Ohio or Bowling Green, Kentucky. WikiSysop 23:11, 2 Oct 2006 (PDT)
