Laure Akai

Laure Akai is an international anarchist born in New York. She has been active in the anarchist movement for roughly 30 years in places including the United States, Russia, and Poland.

[edit] Intellectual Contributions

Akai has written extensively on and for the anarchist movement, primarily on such topics as anti-sexism, freedom of sexual expression, alternative education and anti-nationalism. She has also dedicated a lot of time studying and fighting with the far right and the new right. In addition, she wrote many pieces critical of left and right influences on anarchism.

Akai serves on the editorial board of some magazines. She has been a key organizer for several protests, summits and conferences including the anarchist festival Anarchy 2003, International Conference of Eastern European Anarchists in June 2003 in Warsaw, A-Fest Anarchist Festival in New York, 2004 and Council of Europe anti-summit in Warsaw in 2005, the World Economic Forum protests and counter-summit also in Warsaw 2005 .

In NYC, she helped start the bookstore Underground Books. She was involved in many long-term projects, especially organizing with farm workers, organic farmers and food co-ops.

During her time in Russia she was active in the anarchist mobilization against the putsch in July 1991 but in Oct. 1993, along with other anarchists, called against getting involved in the power struggle during the second putsch.

She currently resides in Warsaw, Poland and is a collective member of Infoszop Warszawa.
