Anarchist Neighborhood:Asheville
From Infoshop OpenWiki
Asheville is a city with strong libertarian currents despite a general shortage of anarchist organizing. The city's history as a progressive center began at least as early as the 1930s with the establishment of the Black Mountain College, one of America's most fabled experimental institutions in art education and practice.
In recent years, Asheville has been called the "New Freak Capital of the U.S." by Rolling Stone, "a New Age Mecca" by CBS News' Eye On America, and the "most vegetarian-friendly" small city in America by PETA.
Topics of concern in Asheville include development (gentrification and the resulting increase in housing costs), police brutality, racial and economic segregation and a poor job market.
