Anarchist Neighborhood:Mountain West

[edit] Geography
This region was formerly listed as Rocky Mountains, but it has been changed to Mountain West to be more inclusive. The name Mountain West describes a large region of the United States made up of:
ARIZONA - COLORADO - IDAHO - MONTANA - NEVADA - NEW MEXICO - UTAH - WYOMING
[edit] History
Historically, anarchists within the Mountain West have mostly gathered and networked between Colorado, Wyoming, New Mexico and Arizona. Still, all these relationships have been fragile and ever-changing.
It's hard to pinpoint an exact time that anarchists in the Rockies began to meet across states, but in April of 2002 Albuquerque held a Southwest Anarchist Social in Albuqueque, NM.
Later anarchists met in Denver to both protest Columbus Day and continue discussing the idea of a South West Anarchist Network (SWAN).
Finally, in April of 2003 a conference was held in Phoenix, AZ to form SWAN. While individuals at the conference established new contacts and strengthened old ones, the ultimate goal of a network failed. There are many thoughts as to why the goal was not reached, and people held a wide range feelings on how the whole conference went, but there has not been an attempt since to establish a formal network of any kind.
There have, however, been attempts to gather informally in order to begin the steps towards increased communication and solidarity amongst anarchists in the Mountain West.
One attempt was an Anarchist Social Retreat in Del Norte, CO. The event began well with bands, food, games, and hanging out. Unfortunately, the event turned ugly when controversy arose between organizers about agreed-upon rules regarding alcohol and maintaining a safe space. Attendees were not able to fully recover from the drama and most left early.
As of yet there are no plans to hold regional gatherings among anarchists and anti-authoritarians, but other projects have started to help foster more communication and support amongst anarchists here. A paper for anarchists and non-authoritarian radicals has started entitled the Rocky Mountain Resister, which also hosts a website with a newswire, group listing, and other online resources for anarchists in the area.
