The Books 4 Prisoners Crew

A little about us....

Founded in 2001 The Books 4 Prisoners Crew is an all volunteer Prison Abolitionist based project dedicated to providing state and federal prisoners in Ohio, Indiana, and 4 select Texas prisons with free reading material.

We do not consider our program a charity as we feel charity's create dependence and do little to empower those they are attempting to help. Instead we take a Solidarity approach to our prisoner support work. The reading material we provide helps prisoners deconstruct the isolation and institutionalism of prison and helps stimulate individual growth and positive change. Many of the requests our program receives are from prisoners with little to no access to a prison library and/or educational programs. By filling prisoners book requests our program hopes to help fill the gap and stop the revolving door of incarceration.

How to hook up with us and what u need to know before showing up

The Books 4 Prisoners Crew meets every Sunday from 6-10 pm at the International Workers of the World (IWW) Union Hall located in Cincinnati's Northside neighborhood at 4001 Hamilton Ave. It is at the corner of Hamilton and Hoffner across the street from the BP gas station. There are IWW and B4PC fliers and posters in the window. If the door is locked knock loud we might be in the back. We ask that no new volunteers come after 9pm as we are normally winding down at that point and the initial volunteer training and program walk through will take at least a half hour.

1) Our program is based on the work. If you show up to volunteer you will be expected to work. Its important to understand the slightest mistake can result in a book package being rejected by prison authorities so attention to detail is a must. After your initial training, if you are unsure about any part of the packing process please don't hesitate to ask a Crew member for help.

2) All Crew events are drug and alcohol free. Show up drunk or stoned and you will be removed and banned from any future Crew events.

3) Sexist, Racist, Pro Police, and/or Homophobic comments/behavior will not be tolerated at any B4P Crew function.

4) While Discussing and debating your politics and views on prisons, police, the government, can be healthy, volunteers need to realize book wrapping normally isn't the best place for it. Please leave the dogmatic and sectarian political debates outside of book wrapping. While at a packathon your primary focus should be on the prisoners request you are attempting to fill.

5) Volunteers who are disruptive, practice poor Security Culture, and/or are abusive towards other volunteers and Crew members will be removed and banned from any future B4P Crew events.

6) Law Enforcement employees or their supporters are not welcome to attend weekly packathons or any related event. No exceptions!

What is Security Culture?

Creating secure communities is about more than being educated about the state and its security forces. Fundamentally, it means creating working dynamics of respect, education and inclusion in all our work. Building strong communities that act in solidarity with one another is the best protection against infiltration, disruption and other conditions of repression.

So what is a security culture? It's a culture where the people know their rights and, more importantly, assert them in all situations. Those who belong to a security culture also know what behavior compromises security and are quick to work with people who exhibit insecure or oppressive behavior. Security consciousness becomes a culture when a community as a whole adopts this awareness and demonstrates that those behaviors which violate security are unacceptable.
