Criticizing the Authoritarian Left

W hat do you do when your organization is infiltrated by vanguardists?

Introduction

This guide is being put together by a network of anti-authoritarians and veteran activists who are concerned with the interference in activist coalitions and campaigns by Left vanguardists. In many ways, these folks are like zombies--they don't quite understand that their ideologies have been discredited, yet the doggedly persist in annoying activist movements. While most of the time these groups can merely be a quaint annoyance, occasionally they disrupt activist events, campaigns, and coalitions in ways that put COINTELPRO to shame.

This is a guide for activists who want to know how to identify vanguardist behavior and manipulation, who seek to minimize the problems that these groups cause, and who are interested in keeping these groups away from their organizations and projects.

The Big Picture

It sometimes seems that your organization is just dealing with a local vanguardist group. It's not unusual that your group is the target of a concerted national or international campaign by the vanguardist organization to take control of similar groups. For example, during the mid 1990s in the U.S., there were concerted efforts by several national vanguardist groups to take over grassroots groups that were part of the Free Mumia! movement. More recently, the International Socialist Organization (ISO) was involved in a national effort to gain influence and control of campus anti-sweatshop student groups.
