Anarchists in Trouble

THIS IS A HISTORICAL ARCHIVE OF THIS PAGE. MANY OF THE CASES LISTED HERE HAVE PROBABLY CHANGED. PLEASE VISIT OUR CURRENT SOLIDARITY PAGE

Anarchists often find themselves on the frontlines of dissent, which means that we are often targets of police and judicial violence. Anarchists understand that our enemies will not act kindly towards us, so we've developed a long tradition of supporting our comrades who are in trouble with the state. We do this at the same time we support other non-anarchist victims and prisoners of the state.

Jeff “Free” Luers

Back in June 2000, a young activist named Jeff Luers, known to his friends as ‘Free,' set fire with friend Craig Marshall to three Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) at Romania Chevrolet car lot in Eugene, Oregon, using simple milk jugs of gasoline, incense sticks and matches. Instead of receiving a three year sentence and fading into the background, Jeff was slapped with a 22.5 year sentence—which was not only longer than his lifetime at that point, but is one usually reserved for the most heinous of crimes like rape and murder, not acts of property destruction.

Sherman Austin

Sherman Austin, a Los Angeles based web designer and African-American activist, is served a one-year sentence in federal prison for having an “illegal link” on his website, www.raisethefist.com. The link provided readers with instructions on the use and production of bombs. Austin was prosecuted under a 1997 law sponsored by Senator Dianne Feinstein that makes it illegal to distribute information related to explosives with the intent to use that information in a “federal crime of violence.”

Police launched a brutal attack on May Day marchers (and some observers) in Long Beach, most of whom were members of Black Bloc. Local TV news shows broadcast footage that was sharply at odds with their pro-police voice-overs. The following stories provide more accurate descriptions to go with the pictures.

Free Jaggi Singh

Jaggi Singh

Jaggi Singh is free.

Jaggi Singh, an anarchist organizer with the CLAC collective, is the only person who remains in jail after the successful protests in Quebec City in late April. Jaggi was abducted on the streets of the city by a police snatch squad. Jaggi's only crime at that time was being an articulate spokeperson against capitalism. The state has lodged serious charges against Jaggi, several of which are quite silly. Please join the campaign to free Jaggi Singh.
