Second Annual Bay Area Anarchist Book Fair
The Second Annual Bay Area Anarchist Book Fair will take place on Saturday,
March 29, 1997, 10am to 6pm, at the San Francisco County Fair Building in Golden
Gate Park by Ninth Avenue and Lincoln Way. Admission is free. Speakers
will include medical marijuana activist Dennis Peron, spoken
word activist and former Dead Kennedy member Jello Biafra,
Gay movement founder, activist and theorist Harry Hay, spoken
word artist Carol Queen, poet Sparrow 13 Laughingwand,
Northern California American Indian Movement activist Carol Standing
Elk and novelists Peter Plate, J.G. Eccarius
and Jane Doe. Over 50 exhibitors from all over the United States
will be selling radical and anti-authoritarian books, records, posters and tee-shirts.
As part of their twentieth anniversary celebration last year, the San Francisco
anarchist collective bookstore, Bound Together Books, sponsored a Bay Area Anarchist
Book Fair. Over 2000 people browsed through more than 40 tables filled with
new and used anti-authoritarian books and pamphlets as well as tee-shirts, records
and posters. A cafe, an artists exhibit, and a stage with a full rostrum of
speakers provided relief when book browsing fatigue set in. Response from both
attendees and exhibitors was enthusiastic, with several exhibitors surprised
that "People actually came to look at and buy books!"
This years Book Fair will be even larger. Over 50 anarchist book and magazine
publishers and distributors will be displaying their wares. In addition, many
anarchist and anti-authoritarian groups will have info tables. An auditorium
has been reserved for the full schedule of speakers and once again a cafe will
be set up to provide food and refreshments. An expanded visual arts exhibit
will also be featured. The Golden Gate Park location is perfect for a stroll
between book browsing and makes the Bay Area Anarchist Book Fair a pleasurable
and enlightening day long event.
