The election debates allow American viewers a few hours of a very unusual thing - commercial-free television. For two hours they can enjoy a program without facing a barrage of corporate endorsements meant to slickly steer you towards your next consumer purchase. No jingles, no quirky scenarios and no subtle insertion of the latest oh, so useful product. In theory, the choice between John McCain and Barack Obama is so vital for the future of this country that no distractions (including distractions of the 3rd party kind) can be allowed to interfere with the decision-making process of voters.

Negli ultimi anni sembra che il movimento noglobal abbia perso parte della sua potenza sinergica e lo spirito contestativo appare attenuato. Questa analisi potrebbe però essere estremamente semplicistica e potrebbe non tener conto di alcuni elementi maturati solo di recente.

Il '68 rappresenta il culmine di un periodo di forti contestazioni sociali. Le sue premesse, il suo fermento rivoluzionario, la voglia di sovvertire le istituzioni erano già presenti da alcuni anni, in Europa come negli Stati Uniti. In questo ambito può essere sicuramente inserita la filosofia dei Provos (provocatori), che diedero vita ad Amsterdam nella metà degli anni '60 ad un movimento controculturale dai connotati anarchici chiamato per l'appunto Provo.
