Solidarity with arrested in Seattle in Amsterdam

While the weather was the worst of this year; storm and heavy rain, a few dozen people demonstrated in front of the American consulate in Amsterdam on Friday 3d. They wanted to show solidarity with all the arrested in Seattle.

Two years ago we had the Euro-summit in Amsterdam. More than 600 people where arrested then, mostly without having done anything considered an offence. A strange similarity...

The picket in Amsterdam had been organised in less than a day. The consulate didn't want to let a delegation in to present them our demands, so we had to shout them over the fence: Release all prisoners! Stop police-terror in Seattle! Freedom to demonstrate! Some 'pepernoten' were thrown at the building ('peppernuts', traditional sweets in Holland this time of the year. The slogan was: Peppernuts in stead of Peppergas!)

The meeting was used to inform about the last news from Seattle. We had direct contact with friends there via cellular phone. Stories were told about the 600 arrested, and the way they are being treated. But also about the demonstrations still going on, and mass mobilisation outside the jail. We'll keep following closely what happens in Seattle, and won't be satisfied until the last arrested is set free. International solidarity is the globalisation we like!

Next saturday December 11 there will be a broad meeting to discuss the events in Seattle (and the worldwide actions on N30) and make plans for new activities.

(The harder they come, the harder they fall...)
