[edit] Overview
Originally producers of only condensed soup, Campbell's now own numerous brands not directly related to soup products. Campbell's also now packages non-condensed specialty soups.
"Cream of Mushroom Soup," "Chicken Noodle Soup," and "Tomato" are three of Campbell's most popular varieties. Americans annually consume 2.5 billion bowls of these three brands alone. Cream of Mushroom figures in many casserole recipes.
[edit] History
Campbell's was founded in 1869 by Joseph Campbell, a fruit merchant and Abraham Anderson, an icebox manufacturer. The company was originally called the "Joseph A. Campbell Preserve Company" and produced canned tomatoes, vegetables, jellies, soups, condiments, and minced meats.
In 1897 one of Campbell's employees, a chemist named Dr. John T. Dorrance, invented condensed soup. Eliminating the extra water in soup allowed Campbell's to sell soups for much less than their competitors. Soup became so profitable for the company and popular with the American public that in 1922 they formally added "Soup" to their name.
In 1898, Herberton Williams, a Campbell's executive, convinced the company to adopt a red and white color scheme. Red and white were the colors of his alma mater's football team, Cornell University.
In 1904, Campbell's introduced the "Campbell's Kids" as an advertising vehicle. At this time, Campbell's produced 21 varieties of soup, each selling for a dime (USD$.10).
Campbell's introduced the "M'm! M'm! Good!" jingle via radio advertisements in the 1940s. In the 1950s Campbell's started promoting itself with television ads and today remains one of the top advertisers in the US.
