Terrorism

Terrorism

There is much talk about terrorism these days, in the wake of the 9-11 attacks, but there is plenty of confusion about what terrorism really is. Anarchists have been mistakenly called terrorists for a long time. This page will examine what terrorism is and isn't. It may turn out that "terrorism" is an emotional word with no value.

Our working definition of terrorism:

The Anarchist Case Against Voting and Elections

Choose and Lose - the anarchist case against elections

Choose or lose? Hillary Clinton? Barack Obama? Ron Paul? Choose and lose!

Anarchists are opposed to voting in elections and participating in election campaigns. Anarchists think that direct action and other alternatives are more likely to result in a better society than electing Candidate X to political office. Anarchists are also anti-statist and anti-hierarchy and see electoralism as contrary to our goals and practice. And much of so-called "democracy" is bogus and undemocratic, as over half of Americans who don't vote understand.

The New COINTELPRO

For many activists, the infamous COINTELPRO campaign--an anti-radical program run by the US government in the 1960s and 70s--may seem like a remote chapter in the history of American activism. But in recent years, with the upswing in radical activism and the consolidation of the American police state, American activists are finding themselves to be the target of a new COINTELPRO program.

This page contains information and news about developments concerning police harassment and disruption of activists. It will also provide information for activists so that they can be prepared for this repression and fight back.

2002 Infoshop Survey

2002 Infoshop Survey

Preliminary results

At the end of December 2002 and continuing through the month of January 2003, Infoshop.org ran a comprehensive online poll of our visitors and what we hoped would be a cross section of the anarchist movement in the United States. Few polls have been done with anarchists as the subjects, so there is little empirical data on who anarchists are, how they live their lives, and what they think about stuff.

Movement Democracy

One of the things that became clear after the Seattle protests was how important democracy and transparency are to groups involved in the movements for social change. The old paradigm of hierarchical, top-down organizations was overturned and everybody was talking about consensus and spokescouncils. These democractic group processes don't come easy, especially for those of us who were raised in individualistic, competitive Western societies.

The Anarchist Cookbook

We are collecting food and drink recipes for a vegan cookbook to be titled The Anarchist Cookbook. Our goal is to dispel the notion that anarchists are a bunch of bomb-throwing thugs, which isn't even close to the truth. We'd also like to let everybody know that anarchists are great cooks and appreciate good food.

The anti-capitalist movement is a worldwide movement of movements of people that seek the end of capitalism with a vision that proclaims "Another World is Possible!" The protests in Seattle in 1999 may be the most famous manifestation of these movements, but these current for social change go back many years.
