Syracuse, NY Joins Chiapas Protests on Jan. 12

In Syracuse, New York, 30 people attended a hastily organized "Emergency Teach-In on the Indian War in Chiapas, Mexico" on Saturday night, January 10. Speakers included Vernon Bellecourt (American Indian Movement), Nick Cardell (World War II veteran who was arrested at the Nov. 16 action at the School of the Americas), and Pramod Parajuli (anthropology prof., Syracuse U.). The teach-in was initiated by the Syracuse Green Party.

The teach-in concluded with discussion of actions to take. Participants agreed to join in the International Day of Action with a demonstration at 12 noon, Monday, January 12, at the Federal Building in Syracuse, demanding "Stop the War in Chiapas" and "Stop US Military Aid to Mexico."

Plans were also initiated to meet with Congressman Jim Walsh (R-NY, 25th District) to urge him to support legislation cutting US military aid to Mexico until the paramilitary groups are disarmed, the Mexican Federal Army withdraws, and there is implementation of the San Andres Accords on Indigenous Rights and Culture, including the constitutional reform initative of the Commission on Concordance and Pacification.
