Mayday ( May 1st 2001 )

CALL FOR DIRECT ACTION RESISTANCE TO CAPITALISM

Mayday ( May 1st ) is a day to celebrate working class solidarity and resistance to Capitalism. In keeping with this tradition AWOL ( Autonomous Web of Liberation ) is calling for an anti-capitalist, anti-authoritarian day of action.

AWOL is working towards an action around the idea of'Liberate the Streets ' in the City of Melbourne. We are calling on all anti-capitalist groups and individuals who believe in

- consensus decision making -

- direct action -

- organise on the basis of non-hierachy ( autonomous from all centralisation and bureacracy ) to co-ordinate with us for this action.

We are also calling on you to organise your own actions, affinity groups, clusters, net-works and co-ordinations against Capitalism on Mayday.

MAY DAY (May the 1st) is a day to remember and celebrate ordinary people's efforts to acheive a fairer society. We have never been given anything out of the goodness of our bosses or leaders' hearts. In fact these people are trying, all too successfully a lot of the time, to take away the small amount that we have won.

The day is a celebration of a tradition that we don't hear too much about in the mass media or at school - which isn't that surprising when you think about who owns the mass media and who decides what's taught at school.

May Day started in 1886 when people in many countries were trying to have the working day lowered to 8 hours. There were a lot of strikes going on to force the bosses to allow this.

In Chicago a demonstration in favour of the 8 hour day was attacked by 176 armed police, killing many people. Someone (no one knows who) threw a bomb at the police. 8 anarchists were framed for this attack. Even though some of them weren't even there at the time they were all found guilty.

The judge openly said that they were on trial for their beliefs, not for throwing the bomb. Some of them were executed and others spent the best part of their life in jail.

May Day is a day to remember them and everyone else who has stood up to the people in power, from the Eureka Stockade to S11.

On May Day we will be trying to set up a moving 'free space' - a celebration that we've decided on and taken for ourselves, not something that we've gone through the 'proper channels' for or been granted by the people in power. A small example of what life could be like if we lived in a free society.

On Mayday meet at the steps of Parliament @ 8am for food not bombs breakfast, moving threw the city and actions till meeting at the 8 hour moument ( opposite tradeshall ) at 3pm.

AWOL meets every thursay at RMIT near the Leslie Clucas Lounge @ 6.30 pm.

*** meetings are run on consensus decision making

this means that we organise ourselves in the same way that we think society ought to be run. Instead of having a few people making decisions for everyone else, everyone has an equal say in making decisions, and we try and come to agreements which everyone is happy with.
