New Zealand: Campaign to end bullying in McDonald’s Restaurants

OceaniaOctober 7 -- Unite Union is stepping up its campaign for an end to bullying in McDonald’s restaurants today. Crew and managers at four McDonald’s restaurants will take off aprons and down spatulas today in protest against a contract that allows their employer to use their shift roster as a form of bullying and control.

New Zealand: Anarchists oppose China trade deal

The Tongan Riots

OceaniaOn Thursday 16 November 2006, riots erupted in Nuku'alofa, the capital of the tiny kingdom of Tonga. Tonga is an archipelago of 170 islands in the South Pacific, about 3,000 km northeast of Sydney and 2,000 km northeast of New Zealand/Aotearoa. After a pro-democracy march ended outside parliament, an irate crowd of possibly 2,000-3,000 took to the streets. As they rampaged through town, they tipped over cars, attacked government buildings, smashed windows, looted businesses and then set them alight. Many people who weren't at the demonstration joined the riot.

Thousands of Indonesian workers rally to mark May Day

OceaniaJAKARTA, May 1 (Xinhua) -- Thousands of workers from Indonesian capital city Jakarta and vicinity areas gathered here on Thursday to mark the International Workers' Day or May Day. Before proceeding to the State Palace, the workers, who were coming from Bekasi, Tangerang and Bogor, gathered in several spots such as the Banteng Square and the Proclamation Monument in central Jakarta.

Kingdom of Hawaii Siezes Iolani Palace Today

OceaniaHawaiian sovereignty activists from the "Kingdom of Hawaii" have surrounded Iolani Palace this morning, refusing to let state employees either enter or exit the historical site, saying the palace and surrounding grounds are property of the "Hawaiian Kingdom." Signs are posted on the gates and only kanaka — those with Hawaiian bloodlines — along with media are being allowed entrance to the grounds.
