You've based your economics/supply vs demand argument on the assumption that demand for fur is static. I'd say that's wrong and it's why protests and flyers are important. I recall being the freaky vegetarian kid 30 years ago, and see how now my kids' school lunch menus have vegetarian options every meal.....and SHAC was so succesful based on demos...
But beyond that, you argue that limiting supply of fur will raise the price, thus empowering other fur producers...I think a stronger assertion would be that due to a combination of increased risks, additional costs from insurance premiums to security staff and decreasing general demand for the fur, killing mink will be less and less appealing...

In retrospect 17k is hardly a drop in the pond, so nevermind my comments.
