University of Colorado fires Ward Churchill

BOULDER, Colo. - The University of Colorado's governing board on Tuesday fired a professor who likened some Sept. 11 victims to Nazi leader Adolf Eichmann, ending more than two years of academic investigations that provoked a national debate.

Ward Churchill, who had vowed to sue if the Board of Regents took action against him, said immediately after the 8-1 vote was announced: "New game, new game."

Three faculty committees had accused Churchill of plagiarism, falsification and other misconduct. The research allegations stem from some of Churchill's other writings, although the investigation began after the controversy over his Sept. 11 essay.

“The decision was really hard,” said university President Hank Brown.

“The individual did not express regret, did not apologize, did not indicate a willingness to refrain from this type of falsification in the future,” Brown said.

Churchill's essay mentioning Sept. 11 victims and Nazi leader Adolf Eichmann prompted a chorus of demands for his firing, but university officials concluded it was protected speech under the First Amendment.

i'm interested in seeing what people think about this case. is there any legitimacy to the claims he fabricated evidence and/or plagiarized? i havent followed along very closely. i have, however, always found churchill to be a little over the top, though i never formed much of an opinion on him through the limited stuff ive come across.

There is absolutely no substance to the claims against Churchill. He was fired for his political beliefs and nothing else.

chuck, do you know of anywhere i can get a good look at the charges against churchill and evidence to refute them?

ive followed much more closely finkelstein's tenure denial at depaul, wherein his own department supported him and where it was easy to see the value of him and his work. there doesnt seem to be anyone at colorado, from the small amount ive read, who supports churchill...though certainly the situation is different (subject-matter being 9/11 vs. israel) and im not very knowledgeable about it.

appreciate any links or anything you can provide.

You'll have to look around for links. I suspect that most of the faculty at CU are conservative and probably wouldn't stick up for Churchill based on his 9/11 targets.

From what I've read about this case, the allegations against Churchill on academic matters aren't very substantial. I also don't see a big problem with a writer who may get a few citations mixed up over the course of a long publishing career. Churchill's books are meticulously footnoted, so I don't see any reason for him to falsify anything.

Here is a detailed report from the university committee about their investigation, it outlines all the accusations of misconduct.

All the accusations seem rather minor, compared to the weight of Churchill's writings as a whole.

One must ask, have other faculty members been dismissed for similar accusations?

I've read about half of the document linked here, and I should say that while the accusations are minor, as individual accusations, as a total representation of his works, it does indicate that he makes claims without fully looking into the evidence. Now I'll do the same thing from time to time and I'm sure many of us do that to an extent, but I'll retract or admit my mistakes. It seems apparent that the school wanted Churchill to admit his mistakes, but he refused to do so. Acedemia is weak if those in power or who have infulence can make unsupportable claims and get their pockets lined for it. If this were some creationist nutjob or some right wing freak I doubt the left would have any problem with him being caught up in his mistakes.

really makes no difference when you consider that there seemed to be no problem until *after* his remarks.

Of course, the article even admits that controversey results in scrutiny.

I think that people should show solidarity with Churchill by protesting at any University of Colorado athletic events in or near your town. I know that I'll be out in Lawrence later this year and next protesting at any CU-KU games.

You should also buy his books.

Just remember that part of the firing was that Churchill gets to keep his salary for this coming year, something in the range of 90 grand. Don't feel sorry for him. He just has to find a regular job like the rest of us now.

I'm not that worried about Churchill's financial situation, but I think people should stand up against universities who do these things to radical professors. A little protest would also show some solidarity.
