Riot in Tacoma on Friday Night

Direct ActionA protest organized by the Olympia/Tacoma port militarization resistance and the Tacoma sds ended in violence at 3:30 early this morning. Protesters moved from one heavily reinforced police barricade (about 250 riot police) to another in the hopes of participating in a non violent act of civil disobedience by sitting in a street and allowing themselves to be arrested. The police responded by firing into the group with pepper spray pellets, bean bags and rubber bullets followed by CS (tear) gas and pepper spray dispersal gas. I dont have time to write a thorough report back, but let me thank all the anarchists who showed up on Friday.

A protest organized by the Olympia/Tacoma port militarization resistance and the Tacoma sds ended in violence at 3:30 early this morning. A few protesters returned the canisters back to the police line to keep them out of the unsuspecting crowd who was not participating in the action. The police then advanced through the cloud of gas and opened fire on the fleeing protesters, chasing them three blocks and launching at least 20 canisters of gas.

The action ended in a standoff when the police allowed protesters separated from their friends and their rides to pass the police line five at a time with their hands up. eventually the cops only allowed those with car keys to pass and the drivers picked up their friends from the end of the street.

I can't say for sure how many were wounded, but no one required an ambulance and there were no arrests. At least two people were beaten with wooden clubs and five were fired upon at point blank range, mostly towards the chest and face.

There should be two by the same YouTube poster now. Find them both.

Props to the folks in Tacoma! At this point, just shy of four years into this war, we need to all identify the points (such as the shipment of Stryker vehicles) that are happening near us and that we can take action against.

Never allow a gas canister to lay there. Always throw it back!

Thank you Tacoma.

wow. solidarity to folks in the northwest.

when you watch the youtube, you hear some guy freaking out, 'what the fuck are you doing? you just shot me in the head...i'm a citizen of this fucking country!'

in my opinion, this reveals a bit the sense of naivete that we have in united states. let this be just a taste of what is to come. bring bandanas, gas masks, some self-protection/self-defense to future actions. put up the barricades. like in copenhagen, like france last spring, like in greece every fucking week.

don't expect that being a 'citizen' means anything to the police, who are more or less following orders which say that the machinery of war and capital needs to continue moving undisturbed. don't try to reason with them. don't sit down and leave yourself vulnerable, singing nice songs like that.

this movement needs a wake-up call about militant protest...i think the folks in tacoma/olympia got the message friday night.

I've known some very not naive folks to make big deals about police violence, before, during, and after the action. the whole point is to make it clear what police are doing to protesters in case there isn't very good camera coverage of what is happening to them and also to let little lines like that slip into news coverage and make people see this system for what it is.

and if that was the voice of a non-radicalized liberal, he probably just got a big wake-up call and he's seeing this system for what it is. police conduct has been a major factor in the radicalization of several people i know. no need to get self-righteous about it, just to point out that being a citizen doesn't mean a whole hell of a lot when you dissent.

I haven't been able to get that Youtube link to work all day. Does anyone else have this problem? The number of hits listed for it are unusually low, given that it's of high interest.

Port Militarization Resistance has a city council-person on their steering committee.

"Port Militarization Resistance has a city council-person on their steering committee." (sic!!)

That would be Olympia PMR - not Tacoma PMR. There is a city council member in Olympia PMR. But there is no "steering committee". It's a non-hierarchical group. He's a great guy. He was at the Port of Olympia protests with us last year taking direct action.

stay tuned for updates from the port.

tear it down.

the 2nd video shows barricades across the street at the end. That was a good tactical decision. Keep that shit up. Next time, light em up.

Yes!!

Tonight is crucial everybody, definitely come down. Dont ask yourself how large it will be, what will happen etc. We need to do this at all costs. We have an opportunity to bring to light how repressive the police are; and just how often they're breaking the law.

Furthermore, I would encourage anybody who was shot to take photos and bring them to the city council meeting yesterday; especially folks who were shot above the waist(illegal)

See you all tonight, and bring your driving force to end this fucking war!

WHOSE STREETS? OUR STREETS!!
