Wife Swap - $20,000 To An Interesting Family

News ArchiveI live in a communal home, and for the past 6 months we have recieved correspondence from the producers of a TV program called Wife Swap.

The premise of the show is outlined below. Without a doubt its rather disturbing. Their interest in us is as an Intentional Community, and I am aware that many other communities within the intetentional communities movement have been recieving these same emails.
Of course none of us are married in any conventional sense, nor are we a family with 2.5 kids (however there is a dog). And besides the disgust and lack of interest, all of which have been communicated, we again are recieving interested emails from the show's creators.

My motivation for posting is to provide a potential outlet to a. pull a good scam, b. waste the time of some bourgeois media outlet, c. if you really want to put yourself through the bullshit maybe make a load of cash and donate a portion to some well-recieving group.

And not that this is of any news, but I also wish to expose the nature through which entertainment television goes to create these so-called reality TV programs.

ONE WEEK, TWO FAMILIES, A GREAT EXPERIENCE

The xxxxxxxxx calls Wife Swap "A fascinating sociological experiment. promisingly sly and serious, funny and flabbergasting". The xxxxxxxxx says the show is ".impossible to stop watching".

The premise of Wife Swap is simple: for two weeks, two wives from two different families with very different values exchange husbands, children and lives (but not bedrooms) to discover what it's like to live a different woman's life.

Wife Swap families rave about their experiences on the show. Jody Spolansky, a New York City heiress who appeared on the premiere episode, says " What a great way to step outside your life and see how someone else lives". Caprice DeLauder, who swapped places on another episode, says, "I was not ready for Wife Swap to end after two weeks". And Nicole Stallone, a daughter in one episode says, " We always appreciated our mom, but we gained a whole new appreciation for everything that she does for us".

We are looking for very interesting families with outgoing personalities and interesting lifestyles and children over the age of 5 living at home. We pay families $20,000 if they make it onto the show, and if you refer a family that makes it on the show, we pay a $1000 referral fee. If this describes your family, or someone you know please call us!

First of all, this sounds like a load of shit. Second- This has absolutely nothing to do with news. Why is it here?

yeah, i would agree that this is not exactly news. and I too question the
need or validity of it being posted in this forum. but as far as being a a
"load of shit," how honest are you actually being with us? Did you look
at the website? did you email or call the contact to confirm this is "a
load of shit"? I'm guessing you didn't.
Just as we hold an expectation that news information be reliable and
honest, I see no reason not to hold the same expectation of others in
this movement. It does little to fling accusations when one is not
personally ready to investigate for themselves, much less for others when
in a public forum, the content of information that we interact with daily.

Who really cares. If someone wants to make a FOOL of themselves on NATIONAL TELEVISION, go ahead. I really hate and loathe reality shows, I don't even see whats so entertaining about them, and the certainly don't expose any truths about life and people.

The point of reality TV shows is to make insane amounts of money from advertisers, and to get normal people to waste their time watching said advertisements.

$20,000 is a tiny fraction of what the studios would have to pay for a television series with real actors.

They are cashing in big time and looking to exploit alternative-lifestyle families in order to keep the plain people interested.

It would be awfully hypocritical to spout the virtues of anarcho-folks while putting money in the pockets of ABC (aka the Disney corporation) and helping advertisers sell cars, gasoline, makeup, fast food and Nikes.

In other words: a load of shit.

If this article happens to land an anarcho-family 20,000$, plus some heavily edited airtime to badmouth all the things we hate, then well done. I've seen much more questionable crap (imho) come across this wire, but really, in the off- chance that one of the readers cashes in on this, I'd say it's well worth the minor annoyance to others.

I'm sorry but this is a better than most teevee show-it has shown that class differences exist in the us, which is never shown, or even whispered about.

That said $20,000 is a tiny speck of turd on disney's underwear-anybody doing anything with this outfit should IMO act accordingly and try to in some way do damage to the network and/or the sorry losers (like me) watching. Refer to situationalists, Andy Kaufman, destroy the spectacle if it can be....

So we DID this stupid show last month. We knew it was going to be difficuilt at best, but it turned out much worse. Our episode airs on the 7th of November. We started out thinking what a great scam, then got excited by the idea of putting memes forth in a freegan "let them pay for the airtime to put our words out there" kind of spirit and ended up feeling bruised by the monster....

Here's a a copy of a press release that we responded to yesterday. We probaby lost the 20K by doing so, as we're contracted to not talk to any press source that ABC has not pre-arranged, but since we've taken so many other chances at blowing the money all the way through the filming etc, we thought it still best to speak up. It might be futile as the editing will likely make us look like idiots to one degree or another C'est la vie, right?

Humph... hope y'all can follow the thread of the conversation, the parentheses were my responses back.

"Whoever provided you with this press release was as full of it as the folks I had to deal with at RDF/ABC. The whole "experience" is an exggeration and a hoax. What was filmed, let alone what will be shown is, NOT representative in any truthful way of the life my family leads. You should try exposing THAT scam to the public and see where it goes. Now that's drama

After you're done reading this, perhaps you might want to send it on to Priscilla.(press agent) She told us that we'll be needing to do press type stuff and you should be aware that I won't be corroberating lies like this press release is spouting...

Thanks for helping me understand the premise of this wild show. It shows the differences of society and may help us understand and accept each other because all these families seem to be "good " people underneath.
