DENVER - The University of Colorado's regents have scheduled a special meeting to consider a professor's essay that said victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks deserved to die because they were a willing part of "the mighty engine of profit."

The essay by Ward Churchill, chairman of the ethnic studies department and a longtime Indian activist, was written in the aftermath of the attacks. Its contents became known when he was invited to speak at Hamilton College in Syracuse, N.Y.

Some relatives of Sept. 11 victims have protested the college's decision to allow Churchill to speak on Thursday, the same day the Colorado regents will meet on the university's Fitzsimons campus.

CU Provost Phil DiStefano last week said Churchill's views do not represent the university, but he had a right to express them.

A critic, U.S. Rep. Bob Beauprez, R-Colo., said that because Churchill is tenured he apparently is immune from any sanctions by the university but should apologize. There was no answer at Churchill's office phone Sunday, and his private phone is not listed.

Following the attacks, Churchill wrote an essay, "Some People Push Back: On the Justice of Roosting Chickens," that hailed the "gallant sacrifices" of the "combat teams" that struck America.

He said although the victims were civilians they were not innocent. He went on to describe the World Trade Center victims as "little Eichmanns," a reference to Adolf Eichmann, who organized Nazi leader Adolf Hitler's plan to exterminate Europe's Jews.

Speaking for myself, of course, I really think that Ward Churchill's characterization of the 9/11 victims as "Little Eichmanns" to be spot on. Given the fatc that American have profited for many centuries off of the lives of people around the world, it's fair to say that Americans are like the Germans who openly supported Eichmann and the German Nazi Party. If we aren't doing everything we can to fight America and its system of capitalism, imperialism and world domination, we are privileged people who are complicit in America's bloody war crimes.

BTW, "On the Justice of Roosting Chickens" is an excellent book which I will be reviewing here one of these days.

I support Churchill in his intentions. I saw his interview on CNN tonight. I believe part of a college education is to critically analyze the nature of humanity and society. I also believe this negative response to his essay exemplifies two interesting manifestations of a narrow minded patriot or dogmatist. First is that people have consumed his essay with a brash conclusion that it condones the attack in America on 9/11/2001. Churchill has clearly stated this is not the case and that a critical read of his essay makes this clear. Secondly, these people have this conception that America (in this case) has done no wrong in the world to deserve any negative light or action. Their dogma then denotes anyone even slightly sympathizing with people who have attacked Americans (socially or physically) to be in support of terrorism. Let

You should move to a isolated cabin in Montana. Wake-up and smell reality. You are fighting windmills. There is no justice, only survivors. To attain the utopia you seek requires the death of millions and the destruction of millenia of human endevor. To do that to acceive your idea of justice is the most selfish thing I have ever heard. Have a little respect for your ancestors and the rest of us out here trying to make a living in peace

Haven't read the book, but I found the original essay a little harsh.

For instance, he didn't mention the people on the planes or the firefighters at all - and Americans as a whole weren't implicated in that version, just the people in the towers.

Also, its hard to say that 9/11 was revenge for every crime America has committed - if we are to believe the official story, it was a very limited set of causes that acted as motivation. Of course, the most famous past crimes of America, such as Vietnam, are well known in Arabia, so that might have acted as a 'character witness' against us.

I hope Churchill spits in the face of that Republican though.

In his talks he mentions firefighters and accepts them as innocents, but refuses to find their lives more important than the (many more) lives being destroyed/ended by capitalism and those in the WTC.

There's no way Churchill will apologize. He is too committed to the fight, and too fierce to so easily submit to some dumbass Republican.

Vietnam was not a crime, when we pulled out and let the NVA kill millions of Vienamise maybe, but fighting communisms was not a crime, joke or a fairy tale. Talk to a boat foke about why they had to flee by crossing the Pacific on rafts.

Nope. Most of the people who died in the WTC were not "working class" people. Many were office workers from the middle class who are among the people who most benefit from the long history of American imperialism,

Read Churchill's book--it provides an excellent explanation of why he uses this analogy.

While there was ' collateral damage ' it was remarkably low when you think what it might have been ( 40 k and up ) During WW2 there was also massive collateral damage, it's terribly regretable but there it is.Modern wars actually seem to be minimizing this factor. ( at least until the first nuke goes off )But also no one can really say they were not warned following the attack in 1993.
Remember that?
The reason there was a follow up to that 93 attack leads me to violently hope against hope that there will shortly be a massive follow up attack that will finish off the disgusting Pentagon.
When and if that ever happens we need to swallow our squeamishness and add to the effect of such a strike with false alarms DoS attacks and etc.

Rome wasn't burned in a day.

Churchill has addressed this; if not his his book, at least when I saw him speak. Yes, he cares about the innocents that died. But he doesn't care about them more than the hundereds of thousands of children who died as a result of Iraqi sanctions, or all the others America has murdered. You can not use violence as an excuse to not do anything when doing nothing is even more violent.

Both speeches I saw by him this last year referred sarcastically to all the "New York lefties" who got so angry at him- by all their complaints, you'd think there were 10,000 victims, all innocent working class members. Of course, this is not true; the vast majority were specialists in orchestrating capitalism, that's why it was such an effective target. You should really read "Pacifism as Pathology" by him.

This is absolutley false, the WTC is not the same thign as Wall Street or the penatagon

had the attackers hit the pentagon an dwhite house and so on then thsi would be debatable, but the people in the WTC are mostly white-collar workers with no control of capital

the entire idea that just benefiting from a crime makes you a criminal is ridiculous.. all you white people would be criminals by birth under this idea

Ward Churchill has a LOT of truth to his words... ive been following his work as a native american myself, however he was over the top with this

I had the pleasure to see churchill give a talk about his book, on the justice of roosting chickens. im sure it was not the first, or the last time he has called for insurrection against america. the whole time i was thinking "shit, somebody is definately going to shoot this man"! im guessing that sooner or later, he will have a deadly accident, "commit suicide" or simply dissapear.

I'm not surprised at all, being as it's from the AP, but this article completely misrepresents Churchill and his ideas. They totally excerpt his points out of context, and provide no explanation or support as to why he says this. All totally predictable, especially for someone like Churchill who is so easy to take out of proper context. Horrid article. I agree,"On the Justice of Roosting Chickens" is essential reading.
this situation is getting worse. please contact others.

the attack on Ward Churchill seems to be worsening. see this recent article, for example:

http://www.coloradodaily.com/articles/2005/01/31/news/news01.txt

please contact others you know and ask them to speak up for Churchill's right to free spech.

let's do whatever we can to bring attention to this attack on the free speech of one of our pre-eminent cointelpro scholars.
Churchill is a marked man for his cointelpro research alone and an attack on him bodes very poorly for the rest of us.

thanks.

Ward Churchill is a scumbag. I'm not saying America is good in every respect, but those of you who think it's so bad are welcome to LEAVE. That's right! Get the hell out! But you're not going anywhere, are you? You'll stay right here and bitch about what's wrong with America as you sip your Starbucks coffe in the warm little cocoon that is America. Pathetic....

What took 'em so long? This essay has been widely circulated since ...
well, since right after September 11. This is like getting upset because
the movie "Three Kings" criticizes the first Gulf War.

Manufacturing a weak integrity argument to justify free speech violations...

It started in a federal Court in Pittsburgh and has moved quickly to Colorado Universtity and Iraq. It's a stretch, but political hacks have besieged first amendment free speech protections.

They attempt to combine a provacative essay comparing victims of 911 with Nazi criminals and an emotionally charged General's comments on war, questioning whether such is permissible when the comments may cause damaged to an institution's integrity.

Why?

Because in a Pittsburgh federal court a well connected corporate crony has suggested the novice argument, and the legal question is waddling without any legal precedent in need of an activist court.

Thus the current unexplained campaign against
