News ArchiveSubmitted by friend of pog:

People attending the consulta should register by e-mailing pog@mutualaid.org (POG's contact info) or tmc.development@verizon.net (the Merton Center) Please indicate how many people are coming with you, whether you need housing, and any special needs you have.

The Thomas Merton Center (TMC) and Pitsburgh Organizing Group (POG) invite all groups and individuals involved in the struggle for global justice to take part in a Regional Consulta in Pittsburgh, PA from Friday evening, August 29th, to Sunday afternoon, August 31st.

The consulta will serve to help organize and to coordinate responses to the pivotal FTAA ministerial meetings in Miami, FL this November as well as to help build long-term Pittsburgh educational initiatives and networks among groups working to build a more just world. Although the attendees will hail predominantly from our region we welcome the participation of all those able to attend. A more detailed explanation of the goals, objectives, and process of the consulta will be forthcoming.

The consulta is organized around two parallel tracts. On Saturday, August 30th, the TMC will bottom-line discussion on education and outreach efforts. Concurrently, POG is creating the framework for discussion on direct action to disrupt the Miami ministerial. The TMC and POG are working together on these dual aspects in order to most effectively resist the FTAA. One goal for this weekend is to bring together those utilizing different tactical and strategic methods in order to share ideas, information, and build trust.

I\'ve always wondered why folks don\'t just shut a place down AS SOON AS THEY ANNOUNCE THEIR HOSTING OF A SUMMIT? If the purpose is to stop these fucks from meeting, why don\'t folks just go destroy a place that has zero-little security RIGHT AFTER they announce to the public that they are holding a WTO, G-8 or an FTAA meeting? This way, international capitalists would have a very hard time convincing anyone to host their events, since their places would get occupied and/or trashed immidiately! They couldn\'t afford billions of dollars to secure a place for the year between the time it\'s announced and the time it happens!

What if there were a network of people within any given region that would mobilize a tight crew of like 50 folks or so to go and fuck a place up in the middle of the night and make it obvious to them WHY you\'re doing it, and let them know it\'ll happen again unless they pull their hosting out?

Where will those fucks meet then?

Imagine if a place was attacked EVERY TIME they put in a BID? The cops would NEVER know when people would show. In fact, affinities could go at several various times and announce it afterwards online, others can choose to follow it up with another attack or not! Let\'s get creative here!

This is the same weekend as a bi-annual NEFAC Conference. Ugh. Damn. I was so looking forward to being in Pittsburgh for this, but now, I can\'t go. Neither can anyone else in NEFAC, as we\'ll all be quite occupied. Ugh again.

*Nobody* can go? Can\'t you send at least one NEFAC delegate?

I\'m sorry to hear about this, but it does raise one issue I\'ve been thinking about.

We need to figure out some way to disseminate information on when we\'re doing what. Some Meta calender is needed to know when people will be where.

I know the folks in Pittsburgh checked with as many folks and calenders as they could. It\'s a shame they didn\'t find out about this or get contacted by someone.

Anti-cap forces need to get organized now. I know some people don\'t want to do the Padded Bloc and that\'s okay. This consulta is a channce to coordinate not only the PB, but come up with some other larger frameworks. Organzied call out for affinity groups to bring equipment to take down the fences (a la Quebec City)? Do we try to shut down the perimeter with a total blockade? If we don\'t come up with plans the liberal NGO\'s will control the framework...

i hope that all the organizing doesn\'t go on outside of the area.... that miami doesn\'t get deserted while places where there are alot of activists get organized.... i think that seattle only worked because there was also many local activists as well as national hype happening. there isn\'t much activism down here in the sleepy bible-belt of the southeast.

We have to get the microchips readjusted every once in a while. Otherwise we might lose our theoretical and tactical unity. We are the NEFAC. You will be assimilated.

just so people know we are finally getting a website:

www.ftaaresistance.org
and anti-authoritarian, an anticapitalist rfesponse to corporate globalization.

VERY soon it will start getting regular updates.

for now, i will say, don\'t fear. GOOD people are doing work on the ground, as we speak, to prepare for this. but NOT ENOUGH. if a few people wanted to move to south florida for a few months it sure wouldn\'t hurt...

i will post the call to action again in the events page incase anyone missed it. i also just posted info about a puppet parade and month long outdoor theater creation party before the summit. anyone with creative passions come down early! also a good opportunity to get to know the area...;)
