Australia: Socialist Alternative secret documents leaked for your amusement

News ArchiveSubmitted by Chuck0:

"One rival to the socialist leadership of the movement is the Melbourne based Autonomous Web of Liberation (AWOL) an amalgam of
anarchists/autonomists/greenies/life stylists who support non-violence, consensus decision making, "autonomous organising" and are
hostile to the socialist left.
There is undoubtedly a constituency for AWOL style ideas especially in the campus environment groups. However AWOL’s attempt to
pose as an alternative organising centre to the S11 alliance was a failure. "

"For all the talk of hundreds of "affinity groups" organising "autonomous" actions, the vast majority of protesters came to the blockade of
Crown casino organised by the s11 alliance. AWOL was irrelevant at the blockade, having less of an impact than S.A’s (socialist
alternative’s) Red contingent."

"The inability of AWOL and anarchists more generally to play a constructive role in the movement was more graphically reflected in the
lead up to M1. After S11 some of the vibrancy went out of AWOL and it moved in a more sectarian direction. AWOL refused to support
the M1 blockade, opposed to direct action and became essentially a disorganizing force. It combined sectarian sniping from the
sidelines at the M1 alliance with a determined attempt to prevent people participating in the blockade. "

Whether these particular socialists are planning on disrupting anarchist actions or not, be warned that capitalist agents would love to promote animosity between their opponents, whether it\'s Marxist vs anarchist or between anarchists themselves, depleting our resources and wasting our time attacking each other, rather than opposing capitalism.

The obvious counter is to promote division between different factions of capitalists. For example, emphasizing Republican vs \"anarcho\"-capitalist differences, and authoritarian vs \"small-government\" conservatives.

I mostly agree with you about sowing division among capitalists, but given the tendency within the anarchist movement to waste time talking about who is and isn\'t an anarchist, it would be better if we anarchists spent our time fighting the capitalists, while criticizing what remains of the Left. The authoritarian Left always tries to deflect anarchist criticism of their methods and authoritarianism by calling for \"unity\" and condemning \"sectarianism.\" I don\'t know, if I go into battle against the capitalists, I want to know who is on my side. I have alot of doubts that the socialist groups that killed anarchists in Spain, the Soviet Union, and China are going to watch my back when I\'m mixing it up with the capitalists. I follow the authoritarian Left quite closely and I can report that they are up to their old tricks of infiltration and disruption. They aren\'t really interested in the goals of a coalition or issue campaign, they are solely interested in how many young and new activists they can peel off to fill the membership rolls of their groups. The DSP in Australia, which is part of the Socialist Alternative, has been engaging in revisionist history in the pages of their magazine, Resistance, about the nature of the anti-globalization movement. They seek to minimize and downplay the anarchistic methods (consensus decision-making, affinity groups, direct action, leaderless organizations, and networking) that have been effective and are seeking to convince activists that a return to the top-down organizing style of the Old Left is the way to go.

Needless to say, we can\'t fight the ruling class with one hand tied behind our back. Authoritarian socialist groups such as Socialist Alternative are tying that hand behind our backs, whether they know it or not.

slight correction.

socialist alternative is a group in itself and not part of the dsp.

the socialist alliance is a group of approx 15 minor socialist organisation, inscluding the DSP and socialist alternative perhaps.

confusing it is.

James and I are in agreement that the best way to counter Trotskyism and the damage it is inflicting on the anti-globalization movement in Australia, is to focus our efforts on projects and campaigns which demonstrate why our approach is effective and democratic. The only reason why dr. wooo and myself expose the Trotskyists in Australia is to raise awareness about how they are sabotaging the anti-capitalist movement. By themselves, they are not going to grow into a huge socialist party, but their \"intervention\" (their words) into the anti-globalization movement is against the interest of everybody involved, including the non-anarchists. Groups like the DSP and the ISO are only interested in recruiting members into their parties, which they believe represent the best way to fight capitalism. They\'ve been preaching this for many decades and they have nothing to show for it. On the other hand, the anti-capitalist movement got off the ground quickly because it embraced anarchist methods and wasn\'t restrained by the Trotskyists, whi didn\'t know about it. One of the things said by many people at J18 and N30 demonstrations in 1999 was how nice it was to attend an action without having a socialist newspaper shoved in their face.

The authoritarian Left is fading fast around the world, but they still have the ability to sabotage our movements, coalitions, and campaigns. We need to correct them when they lie about the nature of the anti-capitalist movement, but this should be a small priority for us, because our resistance to capitalism is on a roll right now. This requires that we focus our attention on building on the things that we\'ve accomplished in the past 2 years.

I think it\'s more of a ego thing that non-anarchist socialists are concerned that \"their ways\" aren\'t very popular anymore.

> They would just stand there with mega phones
> shouting at people to do this and that while
> everyone ignored them.

This is pretty funny and illustrative of why anarchism has a natural attraction for people. There is an instinctive resistance to following orders from some random person. Just to show how authoritarian methods fail to work, you could walk right up to the guy with the megaphone, maybe even ask him what he would like you to do, then promptly ignore him by doing something completely different. Propaganda by example.

this e-mail comes all the way from canada.
We heard about the stock exchange shut down and we were inspired!
Class struggle activists here are going to attempt to do the same thing in toronto on
october 16th 2001!
so while you kiddies post your petty little whinefests over html
those of us in the real world are fighting back against capitalism.
next time you want to post internal documents perhaps it will help
the struggle more if you use your detective skills to post
the internal documents of a corporation.
perhaps then you will see who the real enemy is.

-neither a self identified socialist or an anarchist
just a pissed off working person that wants to see change in this world.
