Anti-Internet Hall of Shame
In the beginning, the Internet was a fun place where freedom reigned. Now,
those despoilers of public space, the capitalist corporations, and their cronies
are on a mission to take the free out of "internet freedom." We believe that
corporations have no free speech rights and that intellectual property is a
joke. We're also pretty tired of the folks who want to censor what YOU want
to look at on the Internet, be it from school, work, home or at the library.
They only way we can get rid of these evil people is to fight back!
Trademark Protection
The following companies spy on websites for their corporate clients or they
sell software or services that aid corporations.
- Cyveillance
How you can fight back
- Erode corporate trademarks by using
their names in your sites
- Create a parody site or slam site
to criticize a corporation.
- Register a domain name close to the
name of a corporate brand
- Alter logos and graphics from corporate
sites to make fun of them
- Build your own homepage and don't
rely on a portal site
- Avoid "e-commerce" whenever possible
- Avoid scams like the Amazon Partner
program which benefits them more than it does you
- Develop and support public domain
alternatives to capitalist products. Install Linux on your computer. Point
your kids to a site other than DIsney. Make your own site.
- Create a fan site
- Make links to alternative websites
and non-corporate content. Instead of linking to CNN, link to
Zmag.org
- Support MP3 music. Don't buy music
online from corporate profiteers.
Workplace Surveillance
The following companies sell products designed to violate your privacy rights
at work
- WebSENSE
- Censors activist groups like Envirolink.org. Provides a filter for "abortion
advocacy" sites and censors a prominent human rights server in Europe.
How you can fight back
- Organize your co-workers to demand
Internet usage policies which protect your free speech rights. Contrary to
what they tell you, your free speech rights and privacy rights do NOT end
at the employer's door.
- If your employer gives you shit, organize
a union. It's good to organize one anyway just in case.
- Ask your employer that if snooping
on your web surfing is OK, does that give them a right to install a camera
in the bathroom stall?
- Uninstall or disable the software.
See if you can find someone sympathetic in the IT department.
- Sabotage equipment if necessary
- Sabotage the offices of companies
selling surveillance software
Stop the Internet Censors
These are dark times for free speech, especially in the United States. People
living in the U.S. enjoy a pretty good dose of freedom to express themsleves,
but those freedoms are rapidly eroding from already bad position. This page
is devoted towards stopping those who would censor the Internet or dumb it down
to the lowest common denominator. The best way towards achieving this is through
networking and direct action.
Anarchist Black Ribbon Campaign
Support freedom of speech for EVERYONE. No exceptions.
Censorware
Censorware is software that is designed to be installed on a PC so that certain
web sites are "blocked." Thus, little Johnny won't be able to surf to Playboy.com.
We are opposed to software such as this, not just because it violates the rights
of children to learn about the world, but because these programs also block
"extremist" political sites. You may have heard about how the National Organization
for Women was blocked, but did you know that Spunk Press, an anarchist archive,
and this site (at a previous address) are blocked?
Anti-Censorware Sites
- Filtering
and Censorware in Libraries
- Peacefire
Censorware Companies
- Swifteye
- WebSENSE
PICS and other web content ratings schemes
How soon before something like PICS is made mandatory?
