Tips for Visitors to DC

Metro Tips

* Planning to take the Metro to that 8am Saturday meeting? Think again. The Metro system doesn't open until 8am on Saturdays and Sundays. Yeah, it sucks, just ask any DC resident.
* If you plan to party until late at night in the District and if you need to take the Metro to your suburban hotel, plan ahead. The last Metro trains leave Metro Center at around 12:05am, which means that you can catch an outbound train later than that. If you need to catch a train towards DC, to either a hotel or to transfer, keep in mind that the last train may leave a station BEFORE 12 midnight. If you are clubbing on U Street, the last Green line train leaves the U ST.-Cardoza Station around 11:40am. Metro stations close shortly after midnight, so be sure to check your station's closing time.
* Cabs are plentiful in downtown DC and rates are OK if you aren't going far. Fares can be very expensive for trips to suburban hotels.
* Metro buses stop running on suburban routes at around 9:30pm, so check your bus schedule in advance

Vendor tip

* Street vendors in DC are a hardworking lot and can be a adequate source of cheap nourishment. Vendors that are located near the Mall and the White House are going to charge 75% more than vendors a few blocks away in the business district.
